Cache Visited: Canyon High by geocircus
Saturday, 6 April 2002 - 11:45 AM MST (-0700) Stunning! How else can I describe the view at this cache site? Words fail me. After my brother and I broke away from the Dusty Trails (or maybe not) event cache by GrizzlyRider and Drifty, this cache was the first on our hit list. We drove up the road from St. George towards Veyo to where the Ivins Red Mountain trail starts, then meandered the few loops of dirt road. The trail is very rocky, fine for a four-wheeler. Nevertheless, I couldn't resist putting my vehicle in four-wheel-drive and bouncing up the trail for several hundred yards, managing to make it a bit further than I thought we could, before we disembarked and hiked like sane people. The hike up through the pinon pine trees and junipers, the trail chock full of sandstone rocks, was beautiful and pleasant, the air still cool, the sky dappled with a few scattered white clouds. Ah, it was perfect! The last part of the trail (after turning off the main red mountain trail) was quite sandy. But the best part was how the hike brings you so abruptly right to the precipice of Snow Canyon, right to the very top, the very head of the canyon. The canyon literally cleaves the sandstone hills apart below you, an unparalleled vista opening up below your feet. Beautiful! This cache site rivals the Zion Panorama Stash up near the base of the Eagle Crags near Zion National Park. I enjoyed sitting at the edge of the canyon, so I took my time to make a leisurely log entry while my brother explored around a bit. Afterward, we traded places and roles. We had our FRS (Family Radio Service) walkie-talkies with us, and there at the cache site, looking down into Snow Canyon, we picked up several random conversations on various channels. I even managed to chat with someone camping down in the Snow Canyon State Park campground. It was fun. I believe I left a science fiction novel in the cache. I don't recall what I took. I don't recall what my brother took or left either. The hike back was equally pleasant. Once back at my vehicle, my GPS claimed we'd hiked 1.99 miles from the cache to the vehicle, making it a roughly four-mile round trip. A perfect hike to a stunning cache site on a beautiful day. Thank you, geocircus, for a cache that I will definitely recommend! -Astounding St. George, Utah | |
